Big Eat 2012 scandal alert! When Judgementastic BFF MGP got us take out chips and salsa from Papalote, he saw grocery store chips coming through the door! Indeed, we found two types of chips in our baggie and one kind was significantly better than the other. We’ll give the restaurant the benefit of the doubt and assume the better chips were theirs. Turned out to be unimportant, as the salsa took center stage.
THE JUDGEMENT:
Tahamonster: The star is the salsa – chips are an afterthought. The salsa is something truly unique – somehow creamy with just the right amount of heat. Definitely special!
Sketchel: Undeniably delicious salsa. Couldn’t figure out what they put in there to make it creamy (roasted tomatoes and chiles??) but whatever it is I wanted a jar of it.
The Full Experience: Papalote was hosting a big party the night we stopped in, so we grabbed chips and salsa to go. The salsa certainly piqued our interest as to what other treats we might find there, but considering we can buy jars of the salsa at Whole Foods all over CA and other fine food stores in the Bay Area as well as online it looks like we can satisfy our Papalote salsa craving without returning to the restaurant.
Would it make our Top 100 List? The chips – no. The salsa – OH YES! Make this your go-to salsa. Judgementastic approved!
Looks like Orange Sauce, not salsa. Good stuff, though.
Definitely orange-y in appearance, looks like a salsa in person. Have been keeping a jar in the fridge and adding it to scrambled eggs and bacon. SO good!
